Have you ever found yourself staring at a menu for far too long… or avoiding a big life choice because what if it’s the wrong one? We’ve all been there. Whether it’s deciding what job to take, where to move, or even what to say in a tricky conversation, decisions can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already tired, anxious, or second-guessing yourself.
In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), we understand that decision, making doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to come from a place of wise balance — and most importantly, from you.
So today, I want to offer a small moment of encouragement:
You already have wisdom inside you.
Let’s look at a gentle DBT practice to help you connect with it.
The Power of Wise Mind
In DBT, we talk about three states of mind:
Emotion Mind (when we’re ruled by feelings)
Reasonable Mind (when we’re ruled by facts)
Wise Mind (the calm space where both emotion and reason work together)
Wise Mind is the place inside you that knows what matters most. It’s not frantic. It’s not stuck. It’s the steady part of you that can guide your choices.
Exercise: “If I knew, deep down, what the best next step for me is… what would it be?”Don’t rush. You might hear a whisper, not a shout. Trust the whisper. Sometimes clarity begins as a quiet idea that grows.
