Women and ADHD: The Mask of Competence
Neuroscience Insight:
In women with ADHD, the brain’s dopamine and norepinephrine pathways, key for motivation, focus, and emotional regulation, often function at lower baseline levels. Estrogen amplifies these neurotransmitters, which is why many women notice that ADHD symptoms fluctuate across the menstrual cycle, postpartum, and menopause. Because of this biological rhythm, women often unconsciously develop masking behaviors, overworking, perfectionism, or people-pleasing, to keep up. Over time, this constant compensation drains mental energy and disconnects them from their authentic self.
Exercise for Today:
Pause for one minute and ask yourself:
“What part of me is tired of pretending today?”
Write down one small thing you can let go of, a demand, expectation, or self-criticism that keeps you masking your natural rhythm. Then replace it with a gentle statement such as, “I can be both imperfect and worthy.”
End your morning by taking three slow breaths, imagining that with each exhale, you’re removing one layer of unnecessary effort.
